The Moonlight - 2004 Report & Results
The week before the Moonlight I was checking the 5-day weather
forecast on
the BBC's web site. All looked okay, cloudy but dry, however, during on the
afternoon itself it chucked it down and we all got soaked while setting the
field.
(Do you think it would help if I paid my TV licence?)
It did dry up for the shoot, but the damage was done and the original entry
number of 75 was reduced to 53 - anybody want to buy some burgers?
The shoot was MC'd by Chris Bushell and we had the luxury of two judges,
Robin Frost and Mick Pearce. Our Lady Paramount for the evening was Chris
Carter.
With archers from 12 different clubs and nearly a quarter of the entries
juniors, we had a good mix.
The shoot went well despite the lights initially not working (one of the
floodlights refusing to fire up) and the BBQ going on the missing list – see,
underneath the calm exterior you have no idea of the turmoil!
Mark Cosgrave and Alan Gladwin from West Essex dominated the gents recurve
and Alexander Johns, John Guiton and Paul Lees from Rayleigh Town dominated
the junior boys recurve.
Mati Lang had a comfortable win for Black Stag in the ladies recurve.
In the compound categories, Harry Shaw from Southend won the
gents. From
Rayleigh Town Jenny Stroud won the ladies and Craig Solcombe the junior
boys.
The longbow category was won by Alan Mockett from Abbey. Last year we came
under pressure to allow longbows to shoot. With no problems finding arrows
in the green last year, we included a separate longbow class this year. How
many longbows shot? Two! We did, however, get some requests for a separate
barebow class. I think you people do it on purpose!
Eve and Willum Line won the married couples prize.
On the night we awarded the team prize to Rayleigh Town, however,
the team
prize is for the top four recurve archers in each club and on checking we
had included a compound score in Rayleigh's total. The team prize was, in
fact won by West Essex comprising Mark Cosgrave, Alan Gladwin, Tony Bovis
and Graham Hill. Apologies to both Rayleigh Town and West Essex for the mix
up, but all has been resolved now.
Congratulations to all the medal winners and to all for taking part. The
prize for perseverance has to go to Mike Gower from Southend. New to the
sport, it has to be said that he had a rough night, however, was he deterred?
Not a bit - with that attitude Mike you cannot fail in the future. A lesson
for all of us who packed up and went home when we were having a bad day.
Finally thanks to the judges and our Lady Paramount. Also to all of those
that worked so hard to put the shoot together and made it go smoothly on the
night.
